Evening Glow - where is the blue ?

Evening Glow - where is the blue ?

The temptation to add 'blues' is always there when you are painting the sea, but I wanted a different approach to this painting.

Based on an evening walk at Widemouth Bay taking some time to really look with intent where is the blue? It's not there. Instead there is a shimmering light of peaches, silvers, greens pinks and a little aqua.  All these colours are dancing in the fading light and moving with the surf as it crashes onto the shoreline.

My painting process exploits the unpredictable nature of paint with water.  I love to see how it runs, touches the edge of an already laid down damp colour, or sweep a dry brush over the damp area and

wait and watch to see how it settles.

This keeps the work fresh and exciting to work.  Capturing the light and movement in the wave requires a series of layering to create depth and energy.

The foreground is usually the last area to be tackled.  It needs to reflect something of what is happening in the sky and sea.  It's also an opportunity for some stronger contrast and colour to 'ground' the painting.

I have so far sold all of my wave paintings created and not kept one for myself, so this one is going to sit with me at home for a while. Prints are also available in both paper and canvas.
