About Sue
ABOUT Sue Read - Cornish Artist
Growing up on a farm near the sea, nature has shaped every part of my life. With salt water in my blood, I find solace and presence in the landscape; its shifting weather, changing seasons, and daily transformations are a constant source of inspiration. Whether riding Cornish waves on my board, feeling the sharp exhilaration of winters cold water, walking the cliffs or simply gazing out over the horizon, these sensations become woven into my work. Each painting becomes a 'visual poem' to the natural world. I recommend watching the short video above .
When out in nature, I'm collecting fleeting moments of light, colour and atmosphere. If painting outside, I can put these straight down onto the canvas to create something fresh and spontaneous.
More expressive layers of colour, line, and texture are added back in the studio, where I have time to contemplate, sit in the memory of the moment. The studio back on the farmland is a place of sanctuary which holds a strong sense of belonging where I feel very grounded to further work on my paintings.
I work with a range of media including inks, acrylics, charcoal, oils and pastels manipulated with palette knifes, scrim cloth, rubber scrapers, and glazing techniques.
Evolving and shaped by quiet contemplation and deliberate refinement, each piece stays with me until it reaches a place of balance and resonance. When I feel happy.
