Not a Wave in Sight, but there's a Bonus
A heatwave has hit Cornwall. The first for a few years and for most of June and the whole of July, we have been bathed in glorious sunshine. The downside is the lack of surf, which this coastline is well known for, but there are other advantages.
We spent a day at Wanson Beach, near Widemouth Bay. One of my favourites to explore, it is a bit of a moonscape at times, especially as the tide recedes. But this gives lots of opportunity to explore the rockpools, so armed with shrimping nets, as the tide went out, we walked down a gulley sweeping under the rocks.
Teaming with small fry, crabs, anemones of all colours, beautiful seaweeds and a few jellyfish, we were mesmerised for a couple of hours. With a small! bucket of prawns collected, I swam out feeling very much the mermaid in the surroundings. It was quite a surreal moment, still and almost other worldly. A memory that will stay with me for a long time. A bass swam very close by and I nearly stepped on a decent sized flat fish which we tried to catch, but didn’t stand a cat in hells chance.
I am always scanning the beach with an artists eye, and the rockpools were full of colour. I collected several sorts of seaweed to dry for an art project along with some other beach finds which might be of use in future projects, but with the weather so beautiful it is very tempting to spend as much time outside as we never know how long its going to last here.
